706 Benton: A fire that started in the attic of 7-Eleven next to Santa Clara University ignited at 7:45am on September 5.

Just feet away from Santa Clara Fire Department Station 1, the 7-Eleven at 706 Benton Street (at The Alameda) caught fire the morning of Thursday, Sept. 5. The 3 alarm blaze began in the attic and was first reported by construction workers next door at the brand new Santa Clara University parking garage. Traffic had to be diverted as firefighters struggled to extinguish the blaze from the outside as it was deemed unsafe to enter the building. Everybody was able to evacuate with no injuries. A week after the fire, the store remains boarded up and surrounded by a fence. The store has been a favorite late night stop for students who live in the neighborhood. There is no word if/when the store will be rebuilt.
